CELPIP Speaking Task 1, where you’ll be giving advice in response to a situation. This task requires you to provide practical, helpful guidance, typically within 60 seconds. Here’s a structure and some tips to help you prepare:
1. Understand the Situation
- Read carefully to the prompt, which usually describes a person facing a problem or needing advice.
- Identify the main issue and any specific details that might influence your response.
2. Acknowledge the Situation (5-10 seconds)
- Start by showing empathy and acknowledging their situation. This makes your response sound friendly and relatable.
- Example: “I understand that you’re having trouble deciding on a career path. That’s a common concern, and it’s great that you’re looking for guidance!”
3. Provide Clear Advice (40-45 seconds)
- Offer 1-2 pieces of practical advice. Be specific and provide reasoning for each suggestion.
- Organize your response by using transitional phrases, like “First,” “Secondly,” or “Another suggestion is…”
- Example:
- Option 1: “One thing you might consider is exploring different careers through internships or volunteering. This way, you can get hands-on experience and see what really interests you.”
- Option 2: “Another approach could be meeting with a career counselor. They can help you identify your strengths and suggest fields where you could thrive.”
4. Conclude Briefly (5 seconds)
- Wrap up by encouraging the person or giving a positive closing remark.
- Example: “I hope these suggestions help you find the right path. Good luck with your decision!”
